Bad Luck Georgia Bucks | BWB 20.2
\nThe truck was loaded, and every piece of our essential hunting gear was meticulously checked as Michael and Kevin set out for their first hunt of the 2020 Georgia deer hunting season. With the remnants of a hurricane having just passed through, the weather was finally cooling off, promising a comfortable and promising day in the woods. “Let’s see what we can get into,” Michael said, his excitement palpable as they headed to camp, eager to put their deer hunting tips to the test.
Upon arrival, they were greeted by the familiar sights and sounds of hunting camp. “Everybody needs a gate girl,” Kevin joked, as he watched Beth effortlessly open the gate for them. “You’ve got to tell her how good a job she did!” The camaraderie was thick in the air, a cherished part of the hunting tradition, and the mood was light as they prepared for the hunt ahead.

Michael had his Expedition bow ready, and he was eager to get into the Redneck blind overlooking a food plot that had been overrun with weeds. From the elevation of their bow hunting tree stands, they had a clear vantage point. “We’re going to replant this coming week, but it’s still good cover,” he explained as he settled in, the anticipation building. “Let’s see what comes out.” The quiet patience of a hunter settled over them as they waited for deer to appear.

As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows through the pines, Michael’s hopes were high. “It’s our first hunt of the season, and I bet we’ll see some deer,” he said confidently. But as time ticked by, it became clear that luck was not on their side this evening. “I just had a buck come in, a real nice one, but I was too busy worrying about the camera and didn’t give him a shot,” Michael lamented, replaying the moment in his mind. “He gave me a shot; I just didn’t take it. A classic rookie mistake.”

Frustration began to creep in as they sat in the heavy silence, the woods now alive with the sounds of dusk. “I made a mistake today on one of our good shooter bucks,” Michael admitted, the disappointment clear in his voice. “But I don’t think the shot was lethal. I think he’ll be fine.” The reality of hunting is that sometimes things don’t go as planned, a lesson both hunters knew all too well.

“We own our mistakes,” Kevin chimed in, offering a supportive tone. “It happens to all of us. That’s one of the most important deer hunting tips to remember.” They shared stories of past hunts where they had missed opportunities or made poor shots, each tale filled with laughter and the shared understanding that comes from experience. “Maybe we’ll get another chance at him,” Kevin suggested optimistically.

As they continued to wait, their conversation drifted to previous seasons and the deer they had encountered. “There was a deer my dad shot with a bow that disappeared for about a month and then showed back up on a deer hunting trail camera,” Michael recalled, a spark of hope in his voice. “Anything is possible in this sport.”
Despite their bad luck, their spirits remained unbroken. “We’ve got plenty of time left in the season,” Kevin said, his eyes scanning the darkening woods for any sign of movement. “And who knows? Maybe we’ll see something else before dark.”
As the afternoon wore on, Michael reflected on the day’s events. “It’s all part of hunting,” he said with a sigh. “You win some, you lose some.” The thrill of being out in nature, surrounded by friends and the challenge of the hunt, far outweighed the disappointment of not filling their tags. They knew that every hunt is an adventure, a story to be told, regardless of the outcome.
With spirits still high, they decided to head back to camp for some much-needed rest and a hot meal. “At least we didn’t have to clean any deer today!” Kevin joked as they packed up their gear. The laughter echoed through the woods as they made their way back, already planning their next adventure in the beautiful Georgia backcountry.
