GOBBLERS IN YOUR FACE | BW BEARDS 21.10
The sun was just beginning to rise, painting the rolling hills of Kentucky with hues of orange and pink, as Michael Lee made his way to the hunting grounds. A palpable excitement filled the crisp morning air as he eagerly anticipated joining his friends Ryan and Kathy Whitaker for a thrilling day of turkey hunting. “We’ve had something happen that’s never happened before,” Michael said, his voice buzzing with anticipation. “Two gobblers have been sitting in the trees until eight o’clock this morning, gobbling their heads off!” This unusual behavior only heightened their resolve for a successful hunt.
With the sun now shining brightly, casting long shadows across the landscape, they meticulously set up their decoys, strategically placing them to entice the wary birds down from their lofty perch. “We’ve been messing with these birds for a while now,” Michael noted, a hint of frustration creeping into his tone as they watched the gobblers remain stubbornly perched over the flooded pasture. Their patience was wearing thin, and they were ready to make something happen, eager to outsmart these cunning wild turkeys.

As the morning wore on, a collective decision was made to change tactics. “Let’s go find one that wants to die,” Michael joked, his determination unwavering, intent on turning their luck around. They ventured out, carefully tracking fresh turkey footprints along a muddy road, hopeful that they could catch a break and locate a more cooperative bird. “It’s just a matter of time before we catch one,” Ryan reassured them, his voice exuding confidence as they continued their diligent search for the elusive Kentucky gobblers.

As they waited, the anticipation was thick enough to cut with a knife. Suddenly, a magnificent gobbler broke from the trees, its iridescent feathers shimmering in the sunlight, and headed straight for their decoys. “He’s coming right in!” Michael whispered, adrenaline pumping through his veins. With a quick, decisive shot, he took aim but, to his disbelief, missed on the first try. “I can’t believe I missed him!” he exclaimed, momentarily stunned. “But I got him on the second shot!” The relief was immense, and the thrill of the hunt was palpable.

With one tag filled and spirits high, they were eager to continue their hunt for more wild turkeys. “Let’s see if we can get you one next,” Michael encouraged Ryan as they moved stealthily through the woods. The excitement of the morning had fully reignited their passion for the hunt, and they were determined to fill more tags before the day was done.
As they trekked through the tall grass and navigated the muddy patches left by recent rains, they spotted another group of turkeys in the distance. “There they are!” Ryan whispered urgently, his eyes fixed on the birds. They quickly and silently set up again, hoping for another chance at success. “We’ve got to be stealthy,” Michael reminded them, his voice barely audible, as they crouched low, intently watching the birds strut and call to each other, their movements graceful and captivating.
Just when it seemed like they might get a shot, one of the turkeys spooked and darted off into the woods. “I thought we had them!” Ryan exclaimed in frustration, a brief moment of disappointment. But persistence pays off in hunting; soon after, another gobbler appeared from behind some brush, strutting confidently toward their decoys, presenting a perfect opportunity.
“Here we go again!” Michael urged, his voice filled with renewed excitement as they prepared for another shot. The tension was palpable as they lined up their targets once more, their focus absolute. With a quick count of three, both hunters fired simultaneously, the sound echoing through the quiet woods. “We did it!” Ryan shouted as they celebrated their second successful hunt of the day, a testament to their teamwork and skill.
As they gathered around their birds, laughter and triumphant shouts filled the air. “This is what it’s all about,” Michael said, feeling incredibly grateful for the camaraderie, the shared experiences, and the thrill of turkey hunting in Kentucky.
