Treasure the Memories

For years, whenever I harvested a deer or reeled in a prized fish, I would simply clean them and move on with my day. Occasionally, I might snap a quick photo, but more often than not, I wouldn’t. After countless seasons of this routine, a realization struck me: I was missing out on the incredible opportunity to revisit and re-live those thrilling hunting adventures because I lacked any visual records. This oversight meant many precious preserving hunting memories were slowly fading.

Having been a part of the Backwoods Life crew for some time now, I’ve become keenly aware of the importance of documenting every aspect of our outdoor pursuits. We’re now accustomed to taking an abundance of pictures—before, during, and especially after our hunting or fishing trips. It’s become a personal pet peeve of mine to see fellow enthusiasts dedicate so much effort to preseason scouting, putting in countless hours in the field, only to harvest a magnificent animal and then spend merely a minute or two snapping a couple of rushed photos. Truly capturing the essence of the moment through hunting photography tips can make all the difference, transforming a fleeting moment into a lasting memory.

For me, the post-hunt photography session has become almost as significant as the hunt itself. Dedicating a few extra minutes to capture quality images provides a tangible way to remember the hunts, allowing you to return to those moments and cherish them. Moreover, if you consistently take pictures throughout the entire hunting process, from the early morning setup to the successful harvest, you can weave a compelling visual narrative, telling the full story of your adventure through your photos. Often, the challenge arises when you’re hunting solo. An easy and effective solution is to utilize the timer feature on your camera or smartphone. Many of my most cherished kill photos were taken by myself, with my phone balanced precariously on a log, my backpack, or whatever stable surface I could find. Furthermore, there are numerous fantastic apps available that offer filters and enhancements to make your hunting photos truly pop and stand out, ensuring your visual stories are as vibrant as your experiences.

Only One First Turkey

This past April first was truly an unforgettable day, unlike any I have ever experienced. Typically, this time of year is incredibly busy for me, often spent coaching my son’s 9u baseball team on the weekends. However, by a stroke of luck, my son Taylor and I found ourselves with a rare weekend off, presenting the perfect opportunity to head to the woods to chase the old thunder chicken. Taylor has joined me on numerous hunting trips over the years, but he had yet to have the opportunity to harvest an animal. Little did I know that this particular Saturday was destined to change everything, marking a significant milestone in his hunting journey.

The morning commenced bright and early at 5:30 am. Taylor, not typically a morning person, sprang out of bed with an unusual eagerness, ready to go even before my alarm clock could be silenced. We quickly changed into our tactical apparel, enjoyed a quick breakfast, loaded up the car with our gear, and set off. I had a strong intuition about where the wild turkeys were roosting, so in no time, we were strategically set up and patiently awaiting the first gobble of what promised to be an exciting hunt. Taylor was comfortably seated in my lap, and we were well-concealed by a cluster of green, leafy bushes scattered throughout the dense pine plantation. Our decoys were meticulously placed in the food plot, and Taylor had his 20 gauge shotgun at the ready, prepared for any gobbler bold enough to challenge our Jake decoy. I provided Taylor with a few final instructions, and it wasn’t long before the tranquil woods burst into life with the sounds of the awakening forest.

The **wild turkey hunting strategies** began to unfold as the turkeys started gobbling around 7:15 am, continuing their calls until approximately 7:45 am when they pitched down from their roosts. The only significant challenge with our morning hunt was that we had positioned ourselves in the wrong food plot. The birds were on the ground, roughly 200 yards away, and despite my best efforts, they were not responding to my calls. I could elicit an answer from the gobbler, but he was resolute in his decision not to leave his hens and approach our location. It didn’t take long for the hens to lead our target bird deeper into the hardwood bottom, and soon after, the woods fell silent once more. Our first encounter had concluded, but our determination was far from diminished.

Taylor and I spent the remainder of that morning walking through the woods, but we did not hear another gobble. The terrain proved to be quite challenging to navigate, even with my new tactical boots (check it out here), and our patience began to wane. I employed every trick in my **top calling techniques** repertoire to entice the turkeys, but sometimes, despite all efforts, they simply refuse to gobble. Frustrated but not defeated, we made our way back to the truck with the intention of driving to a nearby field to glass for birds. As I turned onto one of the property roads, I spotted a small black speck in the road about 300 yards ahead. I immediately stopped the truck and retrieved my Hawke binoculars, slowly opening my truck door. Once outside, I confirmed that the black spot was indeed a gobbler and passed the binoculars to my eager son. I instructed Taylor to prepare himself, then carefully backed my truck around the corner, ensuring we were parked out of sight. We quickly donned our Realtree gear and stealthily made our way to the edge of the road. We kept our essential hunting gear in our Backpacking pack, which is specifically designed for hunting expeditions. When embarking on any hunting adventure, it is paramount to ensure you have all the necessary **essential hunting gear** beforehand – this might necessitate a trip to a specialized store like Bass Pro Shops, but you can utilize a Raise promo code to secure a discount on your purchases, allowing your money to go further and equipping you for success!

I cautiously peered down the road, confirming that our bird was still in position. I then placed Taylor against a sturdy pine tree, ensuring he was ready for the shot. I belly-crawled through the ditch and out into the road, my turkey fan held strategically in front of me. Once in the road, I began to yelp and cut with my mouth call. It wasn’t long before I saw a white head approaching. The bird never gobbled, but he majestically came down the road in full strut before stopping directly in front of me, approximately 30 yards away. I glanced over at Taylor and gave him the signal to shoot. With a precise squeeze of the trigger, the bird folded instantly. It was a truly perfect shot, a moment of pure triumph.

I don’t know who was more excited in that moment! Taylor leaped up, and I caught him mid-air as he jumped into my arms. I’ve witnessed him hit home runs and score touchdowns, but none of those celebrations compared to the raw joy and excitement of this moment. I swung him around, holding him high in the air, utterly disbelieving that we had just fanned in this magnificent bird, and Taylor had sealed the deal with such a perfect shot. I gently set Taylor down, and we raced towards the bird as it began to flop around in the road. The turkey boasted a paint brush for a beard and impressive long spurs. I told Taylor that this bird was at least three years old, making it one heck of a first bird for him. After capturing numerous photos and calling everyone we knew to share the incredible news, we headed to Little’s Taxidermy with our hard-earned trophy. This bird was destined to hold a special, prominent place on Taylor’s wall! I may not vividly recall the details of my own first turkey hunt, but I will undoubtedly never forget this particular hunt. There is truly only one first turkey, and I am incredibly grateful that I had the privilege of being there for this unforgettable experience with my son!

VIDEO: Opening Day Double

It was a crisp morning in Georgia, the kind that fills the air with the promise of adventure and the scent of damp earth. The early dawn light filtered through the pines, painting the landscape in hues of purple and gold. Michael and Big Mike Lee were geared up and ready to kick off turkey season with a bang, having meticulously gone through their **turkey hunting season preparation**. The excitement was palpable as they set out, each armed with their chosen weapon—Michael with his trusty 12 gauge and Big Mike wielding a sleek .410. The goal? To double down on some long beards, a testament to their seasoned **wild turkey hunting strategies**.

As they settled into their spot near a food plot, concealed by the natural cover, the anticipation grew with every rustle of leaves. “Hey, Michael, I think I see a turkey coming out of the corner!” Big Mike whispered, his eyes scanning the landscape with practiced precision. Michael squinted into the distance, trying to catch a glimpse through the morning mist. “I can’t see him yet; it’s too far,” he replied, adrenaline coursing through his veins, a familiar rush for any hunter.

“Oh yeah, you heard that, didn’t you?” Big Mike asked, excitement bubbling in his voice, a shared understanding passing between them. “I believe they’re coming!” The duo watched intently as a group of turkeys made their way into view, their iridescent feathers catching the nascent sunlight. “It’s a Jake in the front, and there’s a big one in the middle,” Michael noted, his heart racing as he observed the birds strutting confidently across the field, displaying classic turkey behavior.

“Let them separate,” Big Mike instructed, knowing that patience was key to a successful shot. “I can’t get a clean shot.” With the turkeys now in position, offering a clear opportunity, they prepared for the moment they had been waiting for, their breaths held in unison. “Alright, on three,” Big Mike said, his voice steady, a calm command cutting through the tension. “One… two…”

“Three!” Both hunters fired simultaneously, the roar of their shotguns echoing through the quiet woods, a symphony of success. Cheers erupted as they realized they had both taken down their targets, a perfect double. “Hold that thought right there!” Big Mike exclaimed, laughter spilling from him as they approached their prize. “That’s a man-sized Jake at six yards! Totally adequate for a first turkey.” The thrill of the hunt was evident in their jubilant expressions.

Michael chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief, a wide grin spreading across his face. “Six yards? That’s dramatically overkill! You don’t have a head left!” The camaraderie between them was infectious, a bond forged in shared experiences and successful hunts. They reveled in the success of their opening day hunt, a memory to cherish.

“Something about hunting with your children,” Big Mike mused, reflecting on the experience, a profound sentiment in his voice. “I feel like I’m hunting with my kids this morning.” The bond between father and son was evident as they celebrated their achievement together, a moment of pure connection. “Those turkeys were practically in our laps!” Michael added, still buzzing from the thrill of the hunt, the close encounter making it even more memorable.

As they examined their birds, admiring the plumage and size, Big Mike couldn’t help but reminisce about past hunts, the rich tapestry of their shared history. “We killed two on opening day probably the first year we ever started turkey hunting,” he recalled fondly, a nostalgic gleam in his eye. “And now look at us—tagged out before breakfast!” This successful outing was a testament to their evolving skills and effective **wild turkey hunting strategies**.

The excitement didn’t stop there. “We’ve got to get Kevin on one,” Michael suggested, glancing at their cameraman who had been capturing every moment of their adventure, ensuring their story would be told. “Well, not really,” Big Mike replied with a grin, a playful twinkle in his eye. “He ought to be good enough to film this morning’s success.” Their lighthearted banter added to the joy of the morning.

With laughter still ringing in their ears, they reviewed the footage from the hunt, reliving each exciting second. “If he messed up this footage…” Michael started, but then paused, chuckling again, the absurdity of the thought striking him. “You can’t hardly mess this up! I think a kindergarten student could have filmed that!” The ease and perfection of the shot made it almost impossible to capture poorly.

The sun continued to rise higher in the sky as they basked in the glory of their successful opening day hunt. VIDEO: Forgot To Load The Gun!

On a truly beautiful morning for **Turkey Hunting In Georgia**, the sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the rolling hills of Mike Lee, Sr.’s ancestral home farm. The air was crisp, carrying the earthy scent of damp soil and pine, and filled with the vibrant sounds of nature awakening, painting a perfect canvas for a memorable turkey hunt.

Big Mike, a seasoned outdoorsman, was filled with an almost childlike excitement. Armed with his trusty .410 shotgun, he was mentally prepared to employ his tried-and-true **Wild Turkey Hunting Strategies**, ready to take on the exhilarating challenge of calling in a wary gobbler. Every rustle and distant call only heightened his anticipation.

As he settled into his spot, he felt the familiar rush of anticipation. “I don’t know, Big Mike, have you ever been turkey hunting?” Kevin teased as they prepared for the hunt. “Did you load your shotgun?” The banter between them was light-hearted, but little did they know that this day would take an unexpected turn.

Suddenly, Kevin spotted movement down the road. “There’s a turkey in the road!” he exclaimed, pointing toward the bird that was making its way to the left. “He’s right there with those two hens!” The excitement in the air was palpable as they watched the gobbler strut confidently, seemingly oblivious to their presence.

“I believe that boy’s going to come on up here,” Kevin said, his eyes glued to the approaching turkey. It seemed like everything was falling into place; they had finally gotten a gobbler to leave his hens and head toward their decoy setup. But as the turkey closed in, Big Mike suddenly realized something crucial. “Oh no,” he muttered, a wave of disbelief washing over him as he frantically dug around in his **Essential Hunting Gear**. The realization hit him like a cold shower: “I haven’t loaded the gun!” The sheer oversight in the heat of the moment was almost comical, yet utterly terrifying.

Finally, with a sigh of relief, he managed to load his shotgun just in time. The gobbler was now only about four steps away, and Big Mike couldn’t believe his luck. “Hey turkey! I can’t believe you got so close!” he exclaimed, excitement and disbelief mingling in his voice.

“For a .410 gauge shotgun, he’s jelly-headed,” Big Mike remarked with a grin after successfully taking down the gobbler. The joy of sealing the deal on such a magnificent bird was amplified by the unexpected twists of the morning. “That’s when opportunity and preparation finally come together—even if preparation happens at the last minute!”

Perfect Start in Alabama

Turkey season here in Alabama kicked off on March 15th this year, but with the usual hustle and bustle of our daily lives, I didn’t manage to get into the woods until about five days after the season opened. My wife and I had gone down to the farm to fish for the last hour or so of the afternoon on the 18th. On our way out, we paused to see if we could hear a bird gobble, a classic move in wild turkey hunting strategies. We were rewarded with more than just a gobble; we spotted four birds crossing the road and flying up to roost for the night. Armed with that crucial piece of information, I immediately told my father-in-law, David, that I’d pick him up the next morning. We simply had to try for those birds.

Those turkeys were fired up the next morning, gobbling the moment we stepped out of the truck. We found a small opening on the edge of the woods for our setup and let out a few calls. Birds were gobbling all around us, but they had a number of hens with them, making things a bit more challenging. We played a careful game of cat and mouse with them until just after sunrise, then went silent to see where they’d move. As luck would have it, one of the hens broke from the group and headed right toward us, passing just a few feet away. The gobblers, not far behind, fired off a volley of gobbles about 80 yards out, and we knew they were following her to our setup. They initially tried to circle around us, but a few soft calls turned the hens back in our direction, and they passed through the opening at about 25 yards. The gobblers followed, circling around and coming up right behind them. They stayed a little further out, but they were still well within range. David couldn’t get a clear shot at first, so I told him I had one and he gave me the green light. When I shot, the bird started flopping, and the others just stood around in confusion. That’s when the real fun began. David picked out one of the remaining gobblers and took his shot, but it didn’t go down for good. After a mad dash towards the bird, and a rather comical tumble over a low strand of fencing he didn’t see, he was able to finish the bird off. We had our first ever double, a moment every hunter dreams of.

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the rolling hills of Kansas. The air was thick with anticipation as our crew gathered, eyes locked on a magnificent Rio turkey strutting proudly in the distance. “Here’s the deal,” whispered one of our seasoned hunters, his voice barely above a murmur. “We’ve set up on this bird once before.
